On May 13, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez, aged 79, held a press conference—his first in 13 years where he fielded questions from journalists. Amid recent negative headlines surrounding the club and speculation linking Jose Mourinho to a return, Perez firmly denied any plans to step down.
“I regret to tell you that I will not resign. We will participate in the board elections. Some people said I have cancer—I want to make it clear once again: I am in good health,” Perez stated at the outset.
He then singled out reporters in attendance. “Sanchez de Castro, are you here? You wrote that I told someone I was tired. We have decided to cancel our subscription to ABC.” He also called out two other media figures: “We have to fight against many opponents. If you are Juanma Castaño from COPE, you should show more respect for the best club in history. And César Segurola from Onda Cero, I feel he has a hand in everything.”
Perez took aim at Barcelona, saying: “The Negreira case scandal is the biggest disgrace. Barcelona has always benefited from it. There are still such referees in our league. I will present evidence to UEFA. We should have won 14 La Liga titles, but seven were stolen from us. Our eternal enemy is the league.”
When asked about the potential hiring of Jose Mourinho, Perez declined to answer: “Today I will not discuss sports matters. We have not reached that stage.”
