Sergio Ramos has reportedly reached an agreement with the main shareholders of Sevilla FC to acquire a majority stake in the club, amid a particularly tense sporting situation for the six-time Europa League winners. The club’s former youth product could be making a new kind of return to the Andalusian side.

A former Real Madrid captain and product of Sevilla’s youth academy, Sergio Ramos could soon become the owner of the Andalusian club. According to several Spanish media outlets relayed by Reuters, the former Spain international defender has allegedly struck a deal with Sevilla FC’s key shareholders to buy a large portion of the club’s capital, backed by investment fund Five Eleven Capital.

Per El Pais, the operation would involve about 80% of the club’s shares, valued at over 400 million euros. The share price is reportedly set around 3,500 euros. The transaction still needs approval from La Liga and Spain’s Higher Sports Council before it can be finalized. According to Marca, this preliminary agreement was reached after a two-hour meeting between Ramos, Five Eleven Capital CEO Martin Ink, and the club’s majority shareholders. The meeting capped a marathon nine-hour session held the previous day to conclude a process that began in mid-January.

A New Chapter for Sevilla?

This potential arrival of Sergio Ramos comes at a delicate time for the Sevillian club. Once a regular in European competitions and winner of the Europa League in 2023 (its sixth title in the tournament), the club has been fighting for La Liga survival for the past two seasons. With three matchdays left, the Andalusians sit in 13th place, just three points above the relegation zone, after finishing 17th last season, only one point clear of dropping down.

Trained at the club before leaving for Real Madrid in 2005, Sergio Ramos returned to Sevilla in 2023 for one final season in Spain. Now 40, and most recently playing for CF Monterrey in Mexico, he could begin a new chapter in his life, this time behind the scenes with his boyhood club.
